How to Use a Water Flosser: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

No Mess, Just Clean: Getting Started

If you've never used a water flosser before, your first attempt might end up with water splashed all over the bathroom mirror. Don't worry—it is a common rite of passage! Once you master the correct technique, water flossing is incredibly fast, clean, and refreshing.

Step 1: Fill the Reservoir

Start by opening the water tank on your device. Fill it with lukewarm water. Cold water can shock sensitive teeth, while hot water can damage the internal components of your flosser. If you are using the compact SWSH S20, the 200ml tank is perfectly sized for a single thorough session.

Step 2: Choose Your Tip and Pressure Setting

Insert the nozzle into the handle until it clicks. If you are a beginner, always start on the lowest pressure setting (often labeled "Soft" or "Gentle"). Your gums need a few days to adapt to the water pressure. The SWSH E30 offers a gentle mode that is ideal for first-timers.

Step 3: The Secret Technique (Lean and Close)

This is where most beginners go wrong. To avoid splashing:

  1. Lean over the sink.
  2. Place the flosser tip in your mouth.
  3. Close your lips slightly around the tip to prevent water from spraying out, but leave them open just enough to allow water to drain into the sink.

Step 4: Trace the Gumline

Aim the tip at a 90-degree angle to your gumline. Turn the unit on. Start with your back teeth and work your way forward. Follow the natural curve of each tooth, pausing briefly between the teeth where food particles like to hide. Let the water wash over the gumline and flow into the sink.

Step 5: Empty and Clean

Once you are finished, turn the unit off, remove the tip, and empty any remaining water from the reservoir. Stagnant water can lead to bacterial growth, so keeping the tank dry is key to hygiene.
